Merrueshi Primary School
Merrueshi Comprehensive School is located in Merrueshi village, Kajiado County. The school enrollment currently stands at about 500 students from the wider Kajiado county. Some learners are boarding while others are day students. This is a mix school with equal number of boys and girls. The government has supplied many teachers who assist to implement the national curriculum. Nearly all the classrooms and facilities were build by Maasai Association through well wishers.
Kenya recently developed a new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), replacing the old 8-4-4 system with a 2-6-3-3-3 structure (2 Pre-Primary, 6 Primary, 3 Junior Secondary, 3 Senior Secondary, 3+ University), focusing on practical skills, creativity, and learner-centered approaches rather than memorization learning. The new curriculum was introduced in 2017 but faced challenges with resources for teacher training, parental involvement, and infrastructure development. The government continue to make changes to the new curriculum and make sure that it meets students learning.
The curriculum is made up of the following subjects
• Language Skills: Maasai, Swahili, and English
• Mathematics
• Biology science
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Geography, History and Government
• Agriculture, Business Studies,
Each villager with a child in school has to sell a goat, sheep or cow in order to meet school fees for their children. Each child pays $150 dollars, tuition, per term. This amount is enough to cover tuition and boarding fees. It is mandatory for each student to wear school uniform in Kenya’s public school.
The school is managed by the Board of Management, a group of 12 men and women, collectively nominated by members of the community.
The board provides strategic oversight, ensures regulatory compliance, and manages resources. Their primary functions include approving budgets, overseeing financial audits, hiring and managing non-teaching staff, ensuring infrastructure development, maintaining student discipline, and acting as the community’s link to the institution. [
Key functions of the BOM includes:
Financial Oversight & Procurement: Administering school funds, enforcing government financial guidelines, and ensuring all procurements follow public procurement laws.
Human Resources: Assisting in the oversight of the school, participating in the recruitment of non-teaching staff, and supporting the principal to create a conducive teaching environment.
Infrastructure & Resource Mobilization: Sourcing funds and overseeing the development of facilities like classrooms, laboratories, and dormitories.
Student Welfare & Discipline: Enforcing the school code of conduct, addressing disciplinary cases, and guaranteeing a safe, secure environment for learners.
Curriculum Implementation: Monitoring educational standards to ensure that national education goals and curriculum guidelines are met
Community Linkage: Fostering positive relationships with parents, the local community, and sponsors
